Aldridge Brownlee 80th Anniversary Celebration Success

Posted By Susie on September 21, 2009

Bournemouth-based solicitors Aldridge Brownlee celebrated its 80th birthday in style this year by hosting a 1920’s vintage-themed fayre at Winton Recreation Ground on Saturday 5th September. Everyone was invited to the party, which was free entry to all and not for profit, and organisers RT Media put attendance figures at over 4000 people throughout the day.

Fine weather graced the fayre, which featured more than 60 exhibitors and raised over £600 for chosen local charites Pramacare and Julia’s House through a raffle and exhibitor donations. The event was supported by Heart FM and the Bournemouth Echo, who were both present to join in the celebrations.

People came to browse and buy from the numerous art and craft stalls, sample the best locally produced foods or sit in the deckchairs and soak up the nostalgic atmosphere at the main stage created by live performances from local dance school Dance Crazy and a 17-piece Big Band. In the main tent visitors were able to view a timeline of events though history, see a talk and presentation of vintage clothing from local expert Patricia Godwin, view historic photographs from the forthcoming Streets of Bournemouth online museum and meet acclaimed local author and historian, Rodney Legg. Around the perimeter of the fayreground, a collection of cars provided by the Three Counties Vintage & Classic Car Club drew many admirers.

A traditional Punch & Judy show was performed at intervals throughout the day and was a big draw for the younger visitors to the fayre, as were the hundreds of free 80th birthday balloons and balloon shaped creatures and flowers that were given out.

Aldridge Brownlee Practice Manager Paul Sherman commented on the success of the birthday celebrations; ‘Aldridge Brownlee has been delighted to host the Bournemouth Vintage Fayre to celebrate 80 years of providing a full range of legal services to both the public and businesses across the Bournemouth area. We trust everyone has had a great time with us today and we’ve been happy to raise funds for our local charites Pramacare and Julia’s House.’

RT Media Creative Director Ross Thornley congratulated his team for organising such a successful event; “Months of hard work from the team has paid off today with an event that has enabled Aldridge Brownlee to thank the community for their support over the last 80 years and really differentiate themselves. The feedback already has been outstanding and everyone at RT Media should be proud of a well-run day.”

Wood has been used for centuries to flavour fish, meat, vegetables and fruit over an open fire, it was the Pacific Northwest natives who traditionally cooked wild salmon from the Columbia River by smoking a whole salmon on a Cedar or Alder wood plank.  When a Roasting Plank, BBQ Plank or Wood Paper is soaked in water, the wood returns to its fresh just cut flavour and the moisture and smoky aroma is released through slow cooking, either in an oven or on a BBQ, to flavour your food.  Foods cooked using wood are more moist, juicy and succulent as well as more flavourful.
The Roasting Plank Company produces Roasting Planks, BBQ Planks and Wood Papers that give every cook, home or professional, the opportunity to experience back-to-nature cooking but in a modern style. Each product infuses meat, poultry, fish, seafood, vegetables and fruit with a range of incredible delicious wood smoky flavours and moistness.

Currently the fire appliance from the station attends around 1500 incidents per year. These calls cover a whole spectrum from house fires to heath fires and road traffic collisions.

There are three vehicles kept at the station - one frontline appliance that is available 24 hours a day 365 days per year, a spare appliance that is available to replace any that need repair in the county and an operational support vehicle which carries additional equipment and internal deliveries around the county.

    trampolines 300x171 Tiggers Trampolines

The first modern trampoline was built by George Nissen and Larry Griswold around 1934. Nissen was a gymnastics and diving competitor and Griswold was a tumbler on the gymnastics team, both at the University of Iowa, USA. They had observed trapeze artists using a tight net to add entertainment value to their performance and experimented by stretching a piece of canvas, in which they had inserted grommets along each side, to an angle iron frame by means of coiled springs. It was initially used to train tumblers but soon became popular in its own right. Nissen explained that the name came from the Spanish ‘trampolín’ meaning a diving board. He had heard the word on a demonstration tour in Mexico in the late 1930s and decided to use an anglicised form as the trademark for the apparatus.

We will be joined at the Bournemouth Vintage Fayre by Tigger’s Trampolines of Bournemouth, who will be supplying their fully enclosed trampolines and providing a safe and fun outlet for your little ones’ energy!

Julia’s House is Dorset’s hospice dedicated to children with life-limiting conditions. The majority of the children that it cares for are unlikely to live into adulthood (defined as beyond the age of 18). The children’s hospice complements the work of the Julia’s House Community Team, which consists of 65 nurses and carers who travel the county, providing life-changing support for families in their own homes.

In 2008 the charity provided 7,318 hours of care in the community and 5,170 hours of care at the hospice in Corfe Mullen, equating to an overall 65% increase in the care hours compared with the previous year.

It costs around £2.4m to run Julia’s House, yet the charity receives just three per cent of its total annual funding from the government. The rest of the charity’s essential income is raised through the generosity of the Dorset community, corporate partners and charitable foundations.

    Vintage fashions and much more!

Posted By Susie on August 17, 2009

scan Vintage fashions and much more!Patricia Godwin, acknowledged specialist on the Social Whirl of the Twentieth Century, will be joining us at the Bournemouth Vintage Fayre for a witty and illuminating look at the Roaring Twenties!

Patricia’s talks are more one woman show than straightforward lecture - a flourish of fashion and frills interlaced with delightful adverts, extraordinary news items, bizarre political pronouncements, recipes and advice from newspapers and magazines of the day - giving insight and flavour of the period.

Several years ago, Patricia was contacted by an elderly lady who had an extensive family collection of 20th century clothes, accessories, magazines and newspapers, which had been part of the display in her impressive stately home when it opened to the public. As she was the last of her family, she wished the collection to go to someone who would appreciate it, keep it together and continue to give people an insight into those earlier times. She believed Patricia to be the ideal person.

The collection ranged from Victorian underwear, Edwardian motoring outfits, gentlemen’s swimwear, Twenties flapper dresses, ‘young men about town’ blazers and boaters, Thirties bias cut tea gowns, Forties utility fashions, Fifties ‘New Look’ and Sixties mini skirts - plus a cornucopia of period accessories such as jewellery, parasols, handbags, cloche hats, ration books, charleston stockings, wartime gas masks and much more!

Patricia weaves together fascinating and entertaining snippets from this remarkable treasure trove of social history, and we are delighted that she will be giving her talk entitled ‘Anything Goes’ in the main tent at the Vintage Fayre, and displaying a selection of fashions from her collection which date from the 1920s and 30s.
